After reading Aztec, Aztec Autumn had plenty to live up to. It had an amazing and well-researched story with brilliant character development, and a plot that was simple but intriguing at every turn. I am sad to say that Aztec Autumn simply can not even begin to compare with Aztec. Sure, it had the same highly detailed historical atmosphere, but the story line was lackluster and predictable. The ending especially was a major disappointment and anti-climatic, and the whole story itself contained some ridiculous segments that made the story unbelievable. Furthermore, some questions were left unanswered and although the story had great potential for stunning and shocking plot twists, this potential was not tapped on at all throughout the book. One obvious difference between the two books was the lack of depth of the character development in Aztec Autumn. Another thing that was strikingly obvious were the similarities between Tenamaxtli's life and Mixtli's early life, which made it seem as if Jennings merely recycled part of Aztec. However, one thing that can most definitely be praised is Jenning's writing. Even when there were so many obvious errors in this book, his writing style made the book still quite an enjoyable and interesting read; delivering exciting action sequences and a few lovable companions.
