John’s Gospel is often used for evangelism, probably because its stated purpose in 20:31 is to bring its readers to a new level of faith: John writes that “these [things] are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." By comparison, Luke’s preface –for example- suggests a desire to present a chronological narrative, but John was ostensibly seeking to bolster the faith of believers, to birth faith in others, and also to correct various false teachings about Jesus.

So, if these were his targets, how did he attempt to hit them? The narrative –particularly of the first half of the gospel- suggests that Jesus is known through encounter and the entire narrative is framed through a sequence of encounters. The people that Jesus meets show various responses and indicate different aspects of Jesus’ character. The encounter works in two ways, then, towards the real identity of Jesus (a teaching purpose) and the personal response in respect to that revelation (an evangelistic purpose).
