Dogs was a mediocre “pet ed” book. The text focused mainly on the things canines can do to benefit us, i.e., Other uses for dogs include… While it is good to know a breed’s history when deciding which is right for you, the relentlessly utilitarian approach to living beings got a little tiring. And not all of these uses are particularly benign, as we can see in a large photo of a retriever carrying a mangled pheasant. Gundogs are used for retrieving game birds when they have been shot down.

At the same time, this volume does bring up an issue rarely seen in juvenile literature: the overbreeding of pedigree dogs to produce extreme, and sometimes damaging, traits.

Dog breeders have been criticized for going too far sometimes in developing certain features. In their efforts to perfect a particular quality, they might also introduce defects into a breed.

The beleaguered English bulldog is shown as a prime example of when certain breed traits can harm an animal’s health.
