The Battle of Britain on the ground, this book describes in detail the organisation of the Home Guard and the operations of Ground Defence, in support of the RAF air effort. First published in 1943, Roof over Britain is written in the spirit of cheerful bravery that typifies the Home Guard operations of the war. The first thing the Battery Commander heard as he picked himself up was the National Anthem being sung in the remains of the wrecked canteen to end the concert, and the voice of an NCO turning out and organising the fire picquet. Back came the Hun, showering incendiaries, but the workers were too busy to notice them at the time. Four men were killed and a dozen injured, but without the superhuman effort which seemed to come naturally to everybody at the time, some 50 or 60 would have died in the burning camp. And the ATS kept making tea.
