When Loss is Gain is the story of man who finds out he is dying and then survives. Because he has a smart doctor. A man who by then understands that even though he has lost everything, he has gained it all, because he understands the value of his own life. The theme has been used many many times, but the presentation and the location (Bhutan) are entirely new and the book is quite well done.

After he survives, Anand wants to live, not just exist. He eventually ventures to Bhutan to find that elusive meaning of life. Not exactly. He moves there because he is taking a break. Because he is done with offices and work, ambition and all the soul destroying politics that came along with it.

It is in Bhutan that he really finds himself. He learns to live again. "To jump into the river, not just watch from the shore" is one of the most important lessons being taught. It is here, underneath the cliffs that he finds love. Though love is not in the mood to reciprocate. She wants to be a nun.

This is a novel that makes one think on one's priorities in life, on love, on work, on ambition. It makes for an introspective reading, peppered with lovely quotations from a myriad of poets and texts as it is. But at the heart of it, it also narrates a story, that makes you devour the book in one sitting, because you do start to care for Anand and you really want to know just how things went for him.
