This is a diary covering just two weeks in July and August 1936 written by Miss Geogina Giles known to her friends affectionately as ‘Georgie’. Georgie joins up with a group of forty seven young women and Girl Guides for a touring holiday in Bavaria and Austria in the summer of 1936 and to meet Herr Professor Emmerich “Papa” Teuber who had just founded the "Austrian Association of former scouts" and was active as chairman of this association, which was a precursor of the Boy Scouts guilds in Austria.
1936 was a significant year in Germany for they hosted the Berlin Summer Olympics. En route to Salzburg and the Austrian Alps they visited Berchtesgaden and were invited to meet briefly with Herr Hitler at his summer home. He presented a rather strange and notable impression.
Georgie, as a young woman, seems so like one of those popular schoolgirls that appear in the books by Angela Brazil. Not from the Home Counties like Betjeman’s Miss Joan Hunter Dunn, but a suburban Londoner and more of a Joyce Grenfell type, playing the jolly hockey-sticks sports mistress in ‘The Belles of St. Trinian’s, or a present day Miranda Hart, actress, comedienne and writer.
Enjoy her diary of her pre-war adventures abroad and enjoy those long lost days of youth. Georgie’s a good sport and we all admire her dearly.
