When speaking of the spiritual senses we are taking up a long tradition of spiritual writers in the Catholic Church, who frequently have wrote about these topics from their own experience or the experience of spiritual writers or directors whose spiritual athletes under their direction and care communicated these experiences to them for the sake of staying under the guidance of a prudent director.
Among others who have spoken in about the spiritual senses are the following: St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thomas Aquinas, Venerable Louis DuPont, St. Augustine, St. Bonaventure, Hugh of St. Victor, St. John of the Cross, Phillip of the Trinity, Blessed Angela of Foligno, St. Gertrude, Gerson, Fr. Surin, Fr. Nouet, St. Margaret Mary, and Cassian.
The easiest way to explain the spiritual senses is that they are senses so similar to the natural senses that they can be spoken of in this way, but raised to a supernatural mode of knowledge. Just as the natural senses are modes of knowledge for the body, so they spiritual senses are modes of knowledge of God’s presence experienced under the influence of grace, which raises the spiritual senses as modalities of supernatural knowledge of God. They are never ends in themselves, but are means to the pure knowledge of God as communicated thru the infused virtues of faith, hope, and charity.
In the following chapters, we will give examples of each of the spiritual senses with excerpts from the spiritual writers and Saints in order to give indication of their existence revealed in the spiritual life.
Our guide will be the teachings of the Saints as well as Fr. Auguste Poulain, whom St. Pius X, while pope, commended Fr. Poulain’s work as a cause of joy for the Holy Father: “His Holiness is rejoiced at the fruitful result of your long years of study, spent in observing the ways of grace in souls aspiring to perfection.” (Preface, Cardinal Merry Del Val, 1907)
