An interesting exercise.Seven distinguished British historians — all friends and all northerners, I think — came together for a sort of miniature conference at the University of York in 1979.Each presented a paper, which the group then discussed. Each paper is printed here in its original form, and each discussion is summarized in a brief chapter of its own.The point of the exercise was to make the recent historiography on 18th-century England comprehensible to outsiders, both by showcasing recent work on various questions and by demonstrating for students how criticism and collaboration among historians can work. The quality of the papers varies, as always, but I think the book serves its purpose pretty well. The book is dated now, though.
