“Last Words: A Story of Apocalyptic Loss” by Michael Coorlim is one short story from his collection of shorts, “Grief”. “Last Words” is an understated tragedy that nails you right between the eyes on the final page.

The story is too short; I didn’t want it to end the way it did, and would have welcomed several more pages. But I guess that’s why Michael writes, and I read.

The best single word to describe this story is: poignant. I’ll stop short of calling it a tear-jerker, but if it doesn’t strike a nerve somewhere with you, perhaps you should see a doctor. I mean no offense, it’s just that this story starts out almost like any old Happily Ever After story, and right when you start letting down your guard, it just slams you.

I had to re-read the final page, just to make sure I really read what I thought I read.

I did.

Michael Coorlim has several publications to his credit, and 2014 looks like it’s shaping up to be an even more productive year for him. If you’ve never read any of his work, check out “Last Words” for a sample. If you’re at all like me, you’ll be hunting for a copy of “Grief” immediately after you finish “Last Words”.
