This is a book most definitely suited for children in Key Stage 1. The 'beasties' by Jenny Nimmo and Gwen Millward is a beautifully illustrated book where a girl named Daisy is sleeping in her big new bed. As Daisy rests in bed, three 'Beasties' go under her bed carrying perils, shells and beans for example. In turn each beastie begins telling a story about an interesting experience with a King, bird and a Princess respectively. In turn each 'beastie' is given a ring for bravery from the King, a feather for friendship from the bird and a button for faithfulness from the Princess.

The imagery and senses that are depicted in this book are incredible. We get glimpses of places which are far away from this World. The power of the imagination is evident throughout this text. In truth, children in Key Stage 1 will enjoy the wonder and surprise that each page brings.

There is many ways this book can be used in the classroom. It is possible for children to read such a book independently. However, it would be most effective to read this book to the children. The language in the book is wonderfully presented. The use of repetition and adjectives such as: 'razor sharp' is significant as this can support children particularly in year 2 in making their writing more colourful. There is the possibility to use this book in teaching PSHE as there is reference to building friendships and bravery throughout. Finally, this book could be used in Music to explore sounds and rythmns as different sounds such as clicking, growling and musical are evident in the book.
