Five stars just for the photographs: Well known people such as Dexter Gordon, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, Dinah Washington, Kid Ory, Sam Cooke, Howard McGhee, Johnny Otis, Nat "King" Cole, and on and on. What makes the book unique are the photographs of obscure people or famous people as you've never seen them: Lawanda Page (best known in her later years as Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son) as an exotic dancer; trumpeter Don Cherry's father tending bar; one legged dancer "Peg Leg" Bates; Duke Ellington serenading heiress Doris Duke on violin; the "Sweet n' Hot" basketball team with members Charles Mingus, Lee Young (Lester's brother), and saxophonist/arranger/songwriter Maxwell Davis; bongoist Preston Epps; Andy Razaf (he's well known as a lyricist, but I'd never seen a photograph of him; Arthur Lee Maye, who began his life as a singer and found later fame as major league baseball player Lee Maye; Little Caesar and the Romans - "Those Oldies But Goodies", if you're old enough to remember that one; Bob & Earl - "Harlem Shuffle"; a photo of Hampton Hawes' presidential pardon signed by John F. Kennedy; and many, many photographs of performers and other people connected with the music world in Los Angeles - dj's, producers, actors, etc., a lot of whom were unknown to me before I opened this book.

A book not to be missed if you love music and the history of music.
