Title: Ruined (The MC Motorcycle Club Romance #1)
Author: Alycia Taylor
Series or Standalone:Serial/Novella Series
Rating: Four Stars

Ruined is a New Adult contemporary romance that is written in dual point of view. First from the main character Dax and followed by Olivia (Dax’s ex-girlfriend). It is also first in a series of novella’s, short enough to even be considered a serial.

This story follows the life of the son of a motorcycle club named Dax. He has spent the last two years of his life behind bars for a crime that he did not commit and as the story starts, is shown preparing for release. While also preparing for the inevitability of seeing his ex-girlfriend Olivia again.

What jumped out at me most about this story was how similar in looks and even in name that the lead character was to Jax Teller from Sons of Anarchy. Given my near obsession with all things having to do with that show, it drew me in, but was also something I could have done without, considering I wanted him to stand out more than just as another Jax. I do believe that’s where the similarities end though. Dax’s history was not that of Jax, though they do share some parallels, especially in being the kid of the president, but Dax came across far more clean cut, which I have to say, I enjoyed.

Olivia, not knowing the truth behind what really happened to Dax, breaks up with him before he even goes to prison because that’s not a life she wants for herself and knowing that, I did feel for her quite a bit. At the time, based on the information she had, she made a choice for herself and I have to say that endeared her character to me, despite the whole “not standing by your man” thing. Even in such a short period of time within the first book, I sympathized with her, which made me want to continue reading.

The way the two characters are together is another thing I enjoyed. It’s quite obvious that time and distance has not changed much between the two and from their two or three brief interactions, it made me want to delve into it even more, which means I will definitely be picking up the second installment.

As with the last set of Alycia Taylor books I read, this one’s pacing was well executed as well. Everything moved in a timely fashion and there were no moments where I was left trying to play catch up or losing track of what was really going on. Nor was I dragged down by useless facts and details either. There were some questions poised that need to be answered, and I’m sure will be as the series moves on and that worked just fine for me.

Secondary characters in this series are a must. They have to pull you in almost as much as the MC’s themselves and in this case they did. The way that Dax’s mother is portrayed and even his father and (ex) best friend, along with the other members of the club, it works for me and there were times were a couple of them even had me laughing.

Overall this was a very good read. Quick and breezy, but done well enough that I was engaged throughout and wanted to know more on multiple different occasions.

A solid 4* read.
